Udaipur Travel Guide: Lake Pichola, City Palace & Sunset Views

There are cities you visit, and then there are cities that stay with you. Udaipur, tucked into the Aravalli hills of Rajasthan, belongs to the second kind. Known as the "City of Lakes" and often called the "Venice of the East," it's a place where honey-gold palaces rise straight out of still blue water, boats drift past centuries-old havelis, and every evening the sky performs a slow, dramatic sunset over Lake Pichola.

No visit is complete without the City Palace, a sprawling complex of courtyards, balconies and domed towers built up over nearly four centuries. Made largely from granite and marble, it overlooks Lake Pichola and dominates the skyline with cream and amber facades — seen from a boat at dusk, it looks less like a building and more like something carved out of the hillside. Inside, courtyards open into museums holding royal artifacts, miniature paintings and mirrored halls that once hosted the Mewar court.

Everything in Udaipur seems to orbit this 14th-century artificial lake, and a boat ride across it is one of the best ways to experience the city. You pass close to the Lake Palace — a white marble structure that appears to float on the water, its balconies and domes gleaming at dusk — and Jag Mandir, a quieter island palace nearby. From the water you also get uninterrupted views of the City Palace's long facade and the ghats where locals gather each morning.

If one experience defines Udaipur, it's sunset by the lake. As the sun dips behind the Aravallis, the sky moves through orange, pink and gold, spilling directly onto the water, while birds circle above in the fading light. Some visitors watch from a rooftop cafe or the ghats; others prefer to be out on the water as the palaces catch the last daylight.

As night falls, the City Palace and Lake Palace light up, their reflections shimmering across the dark water. The ghats grow quiet, and a gentle stillness settles over the lake — a reminder that Udaipur isn't only a daytime destination; its character simply shifts with the light.

Getting Around and Best Time to Visit

The old city core is compact and walkable, with narrow lanes connecting the City Palace, local markets and lakeside ghats. Boat rides run through the day, though late afternoon slots are the most popular. The best time to visit is October to March, when the weather is cool and pleasant — ideal for boat rides and long walks by the water, with sunrise and sunset offering the best light for photography.
