Best Northeast India Destinations for an October Trip

October is when Northeast India stops apologising and simply shows off. The monsoon has washed the hills clean, rivers are still full, skies turn an impossible shade of blue, and the humidity that makes summer travel here a chore finally breaks.

1. Kaziranga National Park, Assam

Kaziranga's safari season reopens in the last week of October after the monsoon closure, making this the first window to spot one-horned rhinos, wild elephants and swamp deer against grasslands still lush and green. Book an early-morning safari and stay two nights for a backup attempt if the first is fogged out.

2. Shillong and Cherrapunji, Meghalaya

Meghalaya in October is arguably the best reason to plan this trip. Ziro's rice paddies are freshly harvested or turning gold in October, and the Apatani villages are easiest to explore once monsoon trails have dried out — quieter and less touristy than Tawang.

6. Majuli, Assam

The world's largest river island is best visited soon after monsoon eases, when ferry services from Jorhat run reliably and the island's satras and mask-making villages are easy to explore by cycle or scooter.
