Best 3-Day Trips from Delhi in October

October is arguably the best month to travel out of Delhi. The monsoon has cleared the air and greened the hills, daytime temperatures finally drop out of the 40s, and two of North India's most popular national parks — Corbett and Ranthambore — reopen after their monsoon closure.

1. Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand

The core zones reopen on 15 October, making this one of the first good weekends of the season — lush greenery, full rivers, and safaris without the peak-winter crowds. Book permits well ahead, since the reopening weekend fills fast.

~5–6 hours (260 km) — best for wildlife safaris, jungle stays.

2. Nainital & Bhimtal, Uttarakhand

October skies are at their clearest in the Kumaon hills, giving Naini Lake and the surrounding peaks their best visibility of the year without summer crowds or monsoon landslides.

~6–7 hours (320 km) — best for lake views, cool weather, boating.

3. Jaipur, Rajasthan

By October the worst of Rajasthan's summer heat has broken, making it comfortable to actually walk around the Pink City's forts and bazaars instead of ducking indoors by noon.

~5–6 hours (280 km) — best for heritage, forts, food.

4. Amritsar, Punjab

Pleasant October temperatures make this a good month to walk the marble parikrama around the Golden Temple at length, and to catch the Wagah Border retreat ceremony without standing in punishing heat.

~7–8 hours by road (450 km) or a short flight — best for spiritual travel, food, history.

5. Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan

Like Corbett, Ranthambore's safari zones open on 1 October, and the park is often at its most photogenic right after monsoon — dense foliage, full lakes, and good sighting odds as animals move to open areas.

~6–7 hours (400 km) — best for tiger safaris, wildlife photography.

6. McLeod Ganj & Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh

A longer haul, best done as a Friday-night drive or overnight bus, but October's clear skies give the best views of the Dhauladhar range from McLeod Ganj's cafés and monasteries.

~10–11 hours (480 km) — best for mountains, monasteries, cafés.

7. Chopta & Tungnath, Uttarakhand

The "Mini Switzerland of India" has crisp, clear October air and is the base for the Tungnath-Chandrashila trek, one of the more accessible high-altitude hikes near Delhi.

~10 hours (450 km) — best for trekking, mountain views, offbeat trips.

8. Pushkar, Rajasthan

Temperatures cool off nicely by October, and depending on the calendar, late October can overlap with the build-up to the famous Pushkar Camel Fair.

~6–7 hours (400 km) — best for culture, lakes, the camel fair season.

Tips for Planning

  • Corbett and Ranthambore both reopen on 1 or 15 October — book safari permits early.
  • Pack for a temperature swing — hill destinations can be 10–15°C cooler, especially at night.
  • Watch for festival traffic — October often overlaps with Dussehra and Diwali travel.
  • Start early on day one for longer drives like Dharamshala or Chopta.
  • Carry a light jacket for treks — higher-altitude spots get genuinely cold after sunset.

With three days and a bit of planning, October opens up some of the best trips near Delhi — reopened jungle safaris, clear Himalayan views, and pleasant weather in Rajasthan's forts and lakes.
